While there are no vampires lurking within its ancient walls, the castle has seen its share of mysteries and transformations over the centuries.

Donamon Castle, nestled in the Irish countryside, is a place where history and legend intertwine. Its story begins long ago, dating back to 1154, as mentioned in the Annals of the Four Masters. The name itself, Donamon, evokes a sense of ancient strength: Dun Lomghuin, the fortress of Lomghuin.
Throughout the ages, Donamon Castle witnessed its share of destruction and renewal, a testament to the resilience of its stone walls and the spirit of its inhabitants. Yet, it also harbors a tale of a 19-year vacancy from 1920 to 1939, during which locals believed it was haunted by the ghost of a former bailiff. A shadowy chapter in the castle’s history, where myths mingled with reality.

In 1939, a divine transformation took place when the Divine Word Missionaries acquired the property. The castle stood in ruins, a testament to its past glory. The grounds were a wilderness, and the restoration process was far from easy. The beginning was slow and challenging, as they embarked on a journey to breathe new life into the castle.

Today, Donamon Castle stands as one of the oldest inhabited buildings in Ireland, a living testament to its enduring spirit. The haunting legends have given way to stories of resilience, faith, and transformation. Instead of encountering Draculas within these ancient walls, visitors meet remarkable missionaries who have touched lives across Asia, Africa, Australia, America, and Europe.

Donamon Castle reminds us that history is not just about the past; it’s a living narrative that evolves with time. It beckons us to look beyond the legends, explore the depths of its history, and celebrate the enduring spirit that has made it a place of renewal, both in structure and in the souls of those who have passed through its gates.

In a world of mysteries and transformations, Donamon Castle stands as a testament to the enduring power of faith and the resilience of the human spirit. It invites us to cherish the stories of the past while forging our own path toward a brighter future.

However, my attention was diverted by the captivating graffiti adorning Princess Row, Dighton Street, Cheltenham Road, and Picton Street. Intrigued by the “smile-inspiring” artworks, I returned the next day with my Nikon to immortalize these urban masterpieces.

Graffiti, often dismissed as mere vandalism, serves as an unfiltered expression of societal nuances. Bristol, home to the renowned artist Banksy, showcases his thought-provoking graffiti at the Bristol Museum. Despite attracting over 230,000 visitors, opinions on Banksy’s work remain divided.

Banksy challenges the traditional art world, stating, “When you go to an art gallery, you are simply a tourist looking at the trophy cabinet of a few millionaires.” This sentiment echoes in his exhibition’s title, “Banksy vs Bristol Museum,” prompting reflection on the role of art in a socio-economic context.

As graffiti emerges as the voice of the marginalized against the establishment, it evokes discussions on the definition of art. While some see vandalism, others witness a compelling commentary on societal disparities. In the delicate dance between the spray can and the canvas, graffiti becomes a visual narrative, unraveling the complexities of our collective identity.

In the words of Saint John Paul II, “Artistic talent is a gift from God and whoever discovers it in himself has a certain obligation: to know that he cannot waste this talent, but must develop it.” Perhaps, within the vibrant chaos of Bristol’s graffiti-laden streets, there lies an invitation to uncover the profound messages within these urban artworks, challenging us to reevaluate the boundaries of creativity and societal norms.
nilorahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14943348785573037779noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-31537811.post-64877248054592410412009-03-17T03:53:00.001+00:002023-11-05T11:10:34.533+00:00Sir Bobby Robson: An Ode to the Power of Gratitude and Companionship<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-feature-settings: normal; font-kerning: auto; font-optical-sizing: auto; font-size-adjust: none; font-size: 11px; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; font-variation-settings: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">Amidst the glitz and glamour of the 2007 BBC Sport Personality of the Year awards in London, a hushed anticipation settled over the audience as Sir Bobby Robson ascended the stage to receive the coveted Lifetime Achievement Award. Yet, it was not a grand soliloquy or boastful speech that graced the occasion. Instead, Sir Bobby’s words were a masterclass in humility and gratitude, echoing through the hall: “Nobody wins anything on their own,” he declared, “This award really is an extension and opportunity for me to say thank you very much to everybody that has supported me.”

He reminded us that our present existence stands upon the foundation laid by countless hands, both past and present.

Yet, even those who have chosen a separate route have played an indelible role in shaping the mosaic of our destinies, contributing to our growth and the individuals we have become.

These are the true companions, those who critique not out of malice but out of a deep-seated concern for our well-being. Through heated debates, fervent disagreements, and contrasting perspectives, these friendships stand as enduring pillars of strength.

Amidst the humdrum of daily life, a child’s proclamation echoed hope – “Mum… I want to have 16 children!” As the bus resonated with dreams, the simple chatter of youngsters revealed profound aspirations.

Gathered on the road in front of the boarding school, we aimed not to cause mischief but to play our version of a ‘positive game’ — making passers-by smile.

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-feature-settings: normal; font-kerning: auto; font-optical-sizing: auto; font-size-adjust: none; font-size: 11px; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; font-variation-settings: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; min-height: 13.1px;">

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-feature-settings: normal; font-kerning: auto; font-optical-sizing: auto; font-size-adjust: none; font-size: 11px; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; font-variation-settings: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">This delightful game wasn’t about deceit or tricks; it was an earnest attempt to elicit joy. Standing by the road, one of us would flash a smile at strangers, and if they reciprocated, we celebrated the shared moment. No prizes were exchanged, just the simple joy of making someone smile.

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-feature-settings: normal; font-kerning: auto; font-optical-sizing: auto; font-size-adjust: none; font-size: 11px; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; font-variation-settings: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; min-height: 13.1px;">

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-feature-settings: normal; font-kerning: auto; font-optical-sizing: auto; font-size-adjust: none; font-size: 11px; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; font-variation-settings: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">Reflecting on this cherished memory, a quote recently received via email echoed its essence: “The best way to dress up is to put on a smile. A smile is an inexpensive way to improve your looks.” While this sentiment rings true, I’ve come to realize that the best smiles emanate from the purity of one’s heart.

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-feature-settings: normal; font-kerning: auto; font-optical-sizing: auto; font-size-adjust: none; font-size: 11px; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; font-variation-settings: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; min-height: 13.1px;">

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-feature-settings: normal; font-kerning: auto; font-optical-sizing: auto; font-size-adjust: none; font-size: 11px; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; font-variation-settings: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">In the book of Samuel, it’s written: “The Lord does not look at the things man looks at. Man looks at outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart” (1 Samuel 16:7). Our childhood game, seemingly trivial, mirrored this divine perspective. It taught us that genuine smiles, the ones that reflect virtue and kindness, originate from beautiful hearts.

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-feature-settings: normal; font-kerning: auto; font-optical-sizing: auto; font-size-adjust: none; font-size: 11px; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; font-variation-settings: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; min-height: 13.1px;">

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-feature-settings: normal; font-kerning: auto; font-optical-sizing: auto; font-size-adjust: none; font-size: 11px; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; font-variation-settings: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">As we navigate the complexities of life, may we revisit the simplicity of that schoolyard game. In the grand tapestry of our existence, let our smiles not be mere adornments but reflections of the beauty within. For, in the words of Mother Teresa, “Peace begins with a smile,” and in each genuine smile, we contribute to a more joyful world.
<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-feature-settings: normal; font-kerning: auto; font-optical-sizing: auto; font-size-adjust: none; font-size: 11px; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; font-variation-settings: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-feature-settings: normal; font-kerning: auto; font-optical-sizing: auto; font-size-adjust: none; font-size: 11px; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; font-variation-settings: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">By Fr Nilora SVD

These cleverly crafted messages are a tapestry of persuasion and allure, with the hope that we’ll yield to their siren call. But not all ads are born equal; some transcend their role as mere marketing tools and become powerful reminders of our duties and responsibilities.

<p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: times, "times new roman", serif;">Take a moment to consider this peculiar advertisement (see the photos). It’s the kind of ad that tickles your funny bone and, at the same time, delivers a profoundly resonant message. Whenever it shares the stage with its peers, this advertisement consistently stands out, captivating my gaze and coaxing a smile from my lips.
<p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: times, "times new roman", serif;">This ad, in all its whimsical glory, issues a compelling challenge to all who cross its path: If you thoughtlessly drop litter, your once-dignified nose will undergo a remarkable transformation. It will take on the uncanny semblance of the character portrayed in this very ad – a nose now resembling a pig’s snout. In essence, the message is unequivocal: Those who litter are, in effect, no different from swine. It’s a statement that resonates with surprising clarity, forcing us to confront our actions in a thought-provoking way.
<p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: times, "times new roman", serif;">As we contemplate this eye-catching advertisement, let’s draw inspiration from the wisdom of Catholic Saints and notable figures within the faith. St. Francis of Assisi once declared, “For it is in giving that we receive.” This ad, in its unique way, serves as a reminder that by preserving the beauty of our environment and respecting the world around us, we receive a greater gift in return – a cleaner, more harmonious world.
<p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: times, "times new roman", serif;">The renowned Catholic writer G.K. Chesterton once wrote, “The true soldier fights not because he hates what is in front of him, but because he loves what is behind him.” In the face of such an ad, our battle is not against a littered landscape, but a love for the pristine beauty that exists when we cherish and protect our surroundings.
<p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: times, "times new roman", serif;">In conclusion, this seemingly lighthearted advertisement carries a weighty message beneath its whimsical facade. It calls us to be responsible stewards of our world, urging us to choose actions that reflect our true nature – one that transcends the thoughtless act of littering. Solo’s community had bestowed upon him a heartfelt gift - a lifelong promise of health. A gesture, some might say, timed with the grace of twilight years. However, delving into Gesang’s “Tips for a Long Life,” published a few months prior, reveals a man who would undoubtedly accept this honour with humble gratitude.
<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-feature-settings: normal; font-kerning: auto; font-optical-sizing: auto; font-size-adjust: none; font-size: 12px; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; font-variation-settings: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; min-height: 14.3px;">

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-feature-settings: normal; font-kerning: auto; font-optical-sizing: auto; font-size-adjust: none; font-size: 12px; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; font-variation-settings: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">One might expect longevity advice from a maestro to revolve around diets and culinary secrets, but Gesang’s counsel transcended the mundane. His life’s philosophy, simple yet profound, resonates with wisdom we could all embrace: “Enjoy what you have in moderation,” he’d say. “If you’re angry, don’t let it consume you; control your emotions.” And the Javanese wisdom of ‘nrimo,’ acceptance, reminds us that dwelling on the past can only make us sick.
<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-feature-settings: normal; font-kerning: auto; font-optical-sizing: auto; font-size-adjust: none; font-size: 12px; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; font-variation-settings: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; min-height: 14.3px;">

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-feature-settings: normal; font-kerning: auto; font-optical-sizing: auto; font-size-adjust: none; font-size: 12px; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; font-variation-settings: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">These are pearls of wisdom from a man who likely never crossed paths with Janet Cahill, an Irish writer of a different world. Yet, there’s a remarkable symmetry in their outlook on life. In the pages of the “Word” magazine’s October 2007 edition, Janet Cahill unfolds her belief: “Our life is a book of three chapters: the past, the present, and the future. The past is gone, stowed away; the present is our daily companion, and the future remains locked, its key held by God.”
<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-feature-settings: normal; font-kerning: auto; font-optical-sizing: auto; font-size-adjust: none; font-size: 12px; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; font-variation-settings: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; min-height: 14.3px;">

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-feature-settings: normal; font-kerning: auto; font-optical-sizing: auto; font-size-adjust: none; font-size: 12px; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; font-variation-settings: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">I, too, aspire to embrace their wisdom, to cease viewing past triumphs and failures as the architects of my present self. As the maestro wisely quips, “If it’s already happened, then it’s done.” The essence of now lies in my ability to craft beauty for God, for others, and for myself. In Janet Cahill’s vision, the future remains an enigma, and it’s in accepting this uncertainty that we find serenity.
<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-feature-settings: normal; font-kerning: auto; font-optical-sizing: auto; font-size-adjust: none; font-size: 12px; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; font-variation-settings: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; min-height: 14.3px;">

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-feature-settings: normal; font-kerning: auto; font-optical-sizing: auto; font-size-adjust: none; font-size: 12px; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; font-variation-settings: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">Between Gesang, the maestro of Bengawan Solo, and Janet Cahill, the Irish storyteller, words of profound wisdom bridge the gaps of time and culture. Caravans had always been associated in my mind with the “travellers” of Ireland or the “gypsies” in other places. Yet, the opportunity I had never foreseen finally arrived.

Caravan Chronicles: It all began with an invitation from my friends, my fellow parishioners, hailing from the Philippines. They asked me to join them on a holiday at the Burnham-on-Sea Holiday Village, which is approximately an hour’s drive from Bristol. Our sojourn lasted from July 17 to July 19, 2006. We comprised four families, including 12 adults and 9 children. With four vehicles, we could comfortably accommodate our group of 21 people. Thankfully, no one was double-sized, although I was often teased by my friends with questions like, “How many months pregnant are you, ’Fr?” Still, I believed I could fit into a single regular seat.

Caravan Comfort: Our accommodation consisted of two caravans, each equipped with two and three beds, communal rooms, kitchens, toilets, and bathrooms. We also had conveniences like refrigerators and microwaves. Of course, a TV was not overlooked. It was the perfect setup for a family vacation, and we made sure to bring enough provisions to last us three days.

Activities Galore: Despite the brief duration of our stay, we managed to fill our days with an array of activities. We enjoyed two consecutive nights of barbecues, an absolute delight. We also made daily trips to the swimming pool with the children. Our schedule was further enriched by bowling, pool, and even a bit of “gambling” at the Funworks Amusement Centre (where luck seemed to elude me). We engaged in table tennis and tennis matches, watched children’s dramas, strolled along the beaches of Burnham-on-Sea and Minehead (approximately an hour’s drive from our caravan, the beaches may not have been the cleanest, but the beauty of the people was undeniable), and, of course, spent long evenings sharing stories and prayers (for those who still wished to pray).

Impressions and Blessings: The experience was a testament to the beauty and allure of a holiday spent with young families. The sense of brotherhood, unity, and family was palpable throughout. I can only hope that the ever-loving God continues to pour His blessings upon them.

As Saint Teresa of Calcutta once said, “Spread love everywhere you go. Let no one ever come to you without leaving happier.” This simple caravan holiday allowed us to do just that, and the memories we created will forever be etched in our hearts.

(May 19, 2006)
nilorahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14943348785573037779noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-31537811.post-1153748743259000902006-07-24T14:40:00.000+01:002006-07-26T01:58:32.316+01:00Film 'Dances With Wolves' in the Light of RCIA Process & The Challenge of 'Instant Culture'By Nicodemus Lobo Ratu

Having studied the RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults) process, I began to ask: "Is there any connection between the RCIA and our popular culture at the present time?" lucky enough, I found the answer in the film 'Dances With Wolves'. Therefore, it is quite understandable if I try to reflect on this film in the light of the RCIA process.

One of the main issues around the RCIA is that people think that the RCIA is only a collection of rituals that will finish at the end of initation process. In fact, it is not only a collection of rituals but it is an on going process in life. This mindset, of course, comes from the trends in our culture nowadays. One of them is the 'instant culture'.

Film 'Dances With Wolves' in the Light of the RCIA Process

Film 'Dances With Wolves' is one of the best films of our time, which is the winner of seven Oscars in 1990. This film tells a story of an American soldier, Lt. John Dunbar (Kevin Costner) who went to the Western frontier in the Dakota territory in 1864. In his journey, he found an old soldier fort and stayed there. In fact, he entered the Sioux tribe's territory. In this alien place, then, he encountered Indian people from the Sioux tribe. What struck me in this film is the process of becoming a member of the Sioux tribe. In my view, this process has some similaraties with the RCIA process.

In the RCIA, there are four periods in the process of initiation. They are the precatechumenate, the catechumenate, the purification and enlightment, and the post baptismal catechesis or mystagogy. At the end of each period, it is marked by a ritual celebration.
In the Sioux tribe, there is no clear periods in their initiation process. However, looking at this film based on the RCIA process, I think, the four periods in the RCIA are already part of the Sioux tribe's tradition. Therefore, in this part I want to look at the film 'Dances With Wolves' in the light of the RCIA process:

a). The Period of 'Pre-initation or Pre-catechumenate'

In the RCIA, this period is the time of "inquiry on the part of the candidates and of evangelization and precatechumenate on the part of the Church". It means that somebody who knows a bit or not at all about the Catholic faith comes to a decision that he/she wants to learn about the Church or Catholic faith. At the same time, the Church and Christian faithful preach the good news to him/her. It is clear, therefore, that there are attempts from both sides whether it is to learn or to evangelize.

In the film Dances With Wolves, there is the period of "preinitiation". John Dumbar as a new person in the Sioux land has heard about the Indian but he has not seen them. In his first encounter with them, he was afraid, so were the Indians. However, John Dunbar and the Indians have the sense of curiosity. Both of them want to know each other. The Indian tried to 'evangelize' by sending people to meet John Dunbar. And John opened to their approach with his friendly manners or welcoming attitude.

During this period, the Indian comes to learn that John Dunbar is a good man because he helped one of the Indian woman who was wounded. Also, he told them about the coming of the buffalos. This period ends, I think, when John Dunbar smokes a pipe with the leader of the Sioux tribe. Based on the RCIA, I would say that the action of smoking a pipe is 'the rite of acceptance' to the Sioux culture. By doing this, he began the second period: the 'Catechumenate'.

b). The Period of 'Catechumenate'

In the RCIA, the period of catechumenate is the time for instructions or catechesis. It is time to develop "relationship between our catechumen efforts and our worships life". Also, it is a time to be familiar with the Christian way of life, worship and prayer. Moreover, it is an important moment for the Christian to share the mission of the Church which is the spreading the word of God and serving others.

In the film 'Dances With Wolves', in the period of "catechumenate", John Dunbar was allowed to take part in the Indian Sioux hunting tradition. For example, he went on the buffalo hunt and ate buffalo's heart. Also, he took part in their celebration. Moreover, he learned their language and their way of life. This period finished when he was elected to watch over the Sioux warriors family while they were away. In the light of the RCIA, his election can be seen as 'the rite of election'.

c). The Period of 'Purification and Enlightment'

In the RCIA, this period is one of prayer and spiritual preparation. Lent in our liturgical calender is seen as the best time to begin this period. This period will end with "celebration of the sacraments of initiation at the Easter vigil: baptism, confirmation, and eucharist.
In the film 'Dances With Wolves', this period began when he was elected to watch over the Sioux family. In this period, his faith and his true love for the Sioux tribe was tempted. The Sioux family were in danger because another Indian tribe wanted to attack them. Therefore, it requires his wisdom and knowledge to protect the Sioux family. He was succesful. Also, during this period he got a new name as "Dances With Wolves". In the light of the RCIA, this is probably 'baptismal' action. I think this period ended when he was accepted as a full member of the Sioux tribe when he was allowed to marry one of the woman from the Sioux tribe (In this film, the woman was 'adopted' from a white family).

d). The Period of 'Mystagogy or Postbaptismal Catechesis'

In the RCIA, this period is one of "interaction between the newly baptised and the rest of the faithful". It is time to be integrated more fully into the on going life and activities of the faithful.
In the film, 'Dances With Wolves' began a new life as a new family. He integrated fully with the Sioux way of lfie. He dressed like them. Also, he prepared to move his family together with all the Sioux people to the winter camps. However, in the film, it shows us that his new life was in trouble. The new American soldiers took over his post and captured him. They tortured him. Nonetheless, he was rescued by Sioux warriors. The film ended when 'Dances With Wolves' and his wife left the Sioux tribe's winter camps for the sake of the Sioux tribe's future life and his family. He ran away from the American soldiers who were looking for him.

The RCIA Process and the Challenge of 'Instant Culture'

The film 'Dances With Wolves' emphasizes one of the most inportant aspect of the RCIA, is that, 'on going process'. Lawrence E. Mick says that "the RCIA is not simply a collection of rituals to be implemented in our worship services", but it is also "on going process in life". "RCIA is not finished after baptism, confirmation, and eucharist".

However, the notion of process is not an easy concept to understand nowdays. Many people live in the 'instant culture'. Many things are 'instant' or 'ready made'. For example, instant / ready made food, and ready made clothes. Cardinal Murphy O'Connor on BBC Radio 4, on Monday 14 April 2001, says that "we live in an instant culture where we can turn a switch and have instant this and instant that". This instant culture not only influences peoples attitudes toward things but also it influences peoples mindset and way of life. Hans-Georg Gadener says that "these ready made 'solution' invite the person to abandon the journey of the heart, which everyone begins when they wash out by their mother's womb".

In the context of the RCIA, the 'instant culture' has influenced peoples attitudes towards the RCIA process. The RCIA has been seen only as a collection of rituals. After the initiation process, for example, many people do not care any more with Church activities. In fact, according to Brian Coyle the RCIA is more than a collection of rituals but it is a "journey in faith".

---------------------------
Having discussed about the film 'Dances With Wolves' in the light of the RCIA process and the challenge of the 'instant culture', there are some points that are important to reflect on : a). the connection between the RCIA and other cultures, b). the RCIA is an on going process in life. And c). the challenge of 'instant culture' towards the understanding of the RCIA. By reflecting on these points, I hope, we will have a better understanding of what RCIA is about and probably be able to make the RCIA process as part of our journey in faith.nilorahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14943348785573037779noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-31537811.post-1153735080000925472006-07-24T10:57:00.000+01:002008-01-21T16:22:09.129+00:00Street Homeless in Dublin (A Foreign Student's Experience)By Nicodemus Lobo Ratu,SVD

An Interesting Encounter

It was rainy day in December 1999, on my way home from the Dental hospital, I came across Anthony, a middle-aged homeless man, who was sitting beside a hotel, close to Merrion's Square, Dublin. By chance probably, my feelings made me stop and talk with him. He was not an ordinary homeless because he was selling his collection of poems which was typed in very simple A4 paper. I read his poems and talked with him about them for quite a while. As an example, one of his poems, which I think describe a bit of his life:

The Kid

I am the kid that stands in the corner
And nobody asks him to play
I am the kid that stands there
Looking at the world passing by
I am the kid that cried out in the night
And nobody heard a sound
I am the kid that found out what
pain was like an early age
I am the kid that dreamed all dreams
And not one came true
I am the kid who wants to be loved
And knows it will never come true
I am the man that knows loneliness
And know it to be true.
(9-11-99)

At the end I decided to buy his collection of poems. Surprisingly, however, he did not want to accept the money. I insisted that he accept it but he went on to say: "thank you for your time and your willingness to talk with me. I give you this for free, only for you". Then, he signed his collection of poems and gave it to me.

Influenced by this experience, ever since then I had great interest to work with the homeless. Only in September 2001, I had the opportunity to work as a volunteer in a social organisation called "Ruah". It is understandable, therefore, my theological reflection in this article is based on my experience of working with the homeless in Dublin city-centre.

Ministering to the Homeless

I have been working for seven months with homeless in Dublin city-centre. I work with the group Ruah, which conduct soup runs for the homeless. Every Tuesday night we go out in groups, ranging from two to four people depending on the number, on different pre-set routes, such as Dame Street, Baggot Street, the Quay, and so on. On route we stop at any homeless people we come across and offer them soup, tea, sandwiches, clothes and help them to find accommodation for the night. But, I think the most important of all is to listen to them. Having said that, however, it is not easy job because sometimes they will abuse us. I think it is normal and understandable given their difficult background and life. Nonetheless, in my experience many of them are nice and friendly.

Ministering to the homeless, for me, in the beginning was a bit strange. I was a bit afraid of walking on the streets in the night while bringing the box, which contains sandwiches, soups, and so on. There are many stories from people and mass-media about racism or foreigners being attacked. However, after sometimes working with the homeless, I feel better and safer. Nothing to be afraid of. I think, from the homeless themselves, they are really welcoming people.
Having worked with the street homeless, I notice some facts, which are very sad and hard to cope with: First, many of them are quite young. In my very first day working, we met at least 20 young homeless people, boys and girls on one route. Second, most of them are not well physically and mentally. Sometimes we find that they drink heavily and take drugs. It seems they are in the stage of eternal addiction. Third, many of them have told us that they are having difficulties in dealing with their family. Some do not have a family at all. Most of them are lonely. However, the most interesting thing is that they seem to know each other well. Therefore, it seems to me that by staying on the street, they have companionships and maybe it is their only social outlet. It seems that they build a sub-culture, "homelessness".

Social Analysis: Homelessness in Dublin

In the Irish government report, Homelessness, An integrated strategy (department of environment and local government) the definition of homeless is given as follows:

A person shall be regarded by a housing authority as being homeless, for the purpose of this act if- a). there is no accommodation available which, in the opinion of authority, he, together with any other person who normally residing with him or who might reasonably be expected to reside with him, can reasonably occupy or remain in occupation of or b) he is living in hospital, country home, night shelter or other such institution, and is so living because he has no accommodation of the kind referred to in paragraph (a). This definition includes: persons living in temporary insecure accommodation, persons living in emergency bed and breakfast accommodation and hotels/health board accommodation because they have nowhere else available to them, rough sleepers, and victims of family violence.

Based on this definition, in 1996 in Ireland there were 2,501 homeless persons. Amazingly, three years later in 1999 there were 5,234 homeless persons. 3,640 of them are staying in Dublin; 2,960 are homeless adults (1,850 males and 1,050 females) and 990 are dependant children. Moreover, only 8% of 5,234 homeless had a partner and children. 15% had children only. 70% had no dependants and 7% had a partner only. It is obvious that quite a high percentage of homeless people are alone. Furthermore, in the age group, 26% of them are in the age 26-35, which is the biggest group. Then 17% of 21-25 years and 19% of 36-45 years. From these figures, it is clear how low their life span are.

In relation to street homeless, according to the Shaping the future an action plan for homelessness in Dublin 2001-2003 (Dublin: homeless agency, 2001), in Dublin alone there are 275 people street homeless. It is quite a high figures. Although there are 71 distinct services for homeless people in Dublin (one among them is Ruah), which providing contact, friendship, food, bedding, information, and linkages to other services, the street homeless still exist. There are many reasons why homelessness exist. They are: domestic violence, relationship breakdown, chronic disabilities (mental illness, alcohol dependence), drug dealers/users, family breakdown, shortage in housing available to low income households, poverty, and unemployment.

Based on those reasons, it shows us that homelessness is a very complex issue. It is also clear that homelessness cannot be solved by looking at the homeless problem alone but it is important to look at the wider context. I think, as long as unemployment and housing shortage exist, for example, the homeless will always be there. To solve the homeless problem, also means to solve the wider problems in our society. It is very difficult. In my understanding, homelessness will never be solved perfectly but it can be reduced to a certain decree.

Working with the homeless is quite complex. On the one hand we want to help them and at the same time we have to avoid any kind of superiority attitude. It is quite interesting to look at the attitude of people who are passing by and many of the volunteers. Whether they realised it or not, one thing I can feel is their superiority toward the homeless. The homeless are seen as lesser than normal human being. People pass by, give small change. Perhaps people feel better after giving the homeless something. Also, many of the volunteers just give the food, talk for a while and leave them. The way people look at and treat them is like the way a superior person behaves towards others. Many people rarely talk with them as equal human beings, like talking to friends. The mindset of many people is 'I have house, they do not have, I have money, they do not have, I have many things and they have less'. Therefore, People feel pity on them. They feel superior. They define people by what they have rather who they are as human beings. I think as a society people should review their attitude towards homeless.

Theological Reflection: Where there is despair, let us sow hope!

The homeless are categorised as the poor and the marginalized in our society. Jesus in his life associated himself with the poor. Jesus clearly stated that his mission is to bring good news to the poor, release to captive, sight to the blind, and freedom to the oppressed. These people who are materially poor are normally the first to suffer oppression. Therefore, Jesus not only encouraged us to feed the hungry and clothe the naked (Matthew 25, 35-36), but also he challenged the unjust systems. Jesus challenged the power of the law, which was an unjust system in his time. The law was made for humans, not humans for the law.

Working with the homeless is also about giving hope to them. "where there is despair, let us sow hope". Leanardo Boff said that "when people are on their own, the important thing, rather that words, is to communicate an aura of calm and confidence to them". However, at the same time, to be a true follower of Christ demands that we also say no to the destructive and alienating structures, and seek together to create the "new creation" (Haughty). Otherwise, as Donald Dorr stated that "we run the risk of being spiritually corrupted through our "selective and semi-deliberate blindness to social injustices".

Having reflected on the issue above, as a student and as a non-Irish person, I ask my self: what can I do? Do I have the power to change the situation? I think, it is an enormous task and perhaps it is impossible to clear out the roots of the oppressive structures and systems in our society. The late Cardinal Hume said that "the test of a Christian society is in the way it threats it weak and problem cases". I think for me, my task is to treat the homeless will, to feel at home in their own society by listening to and by being their friend. In this way, I think I can bring hope into their life. As a student, perhaps I do not have time and skills to challenge the unjust systems. Mother Teresa from Calcutta said, "I do what I can do, and you do what you can do".

The End: Hope

Working with and for the homeless is a great opportunity in my life. I have learned many things from them. However, homelessness is far more complex than I have ever imagined. There are many issues, which are very difficult to solve by giving food and shelter in the night alone. Homelessness is not merely the problem of those who are homeless, but it is created by an unjust system and the arrogant attitude of modern people.

Realising that our good will alone cannot solve the roots of homelessness, personally, I think as a student, it is better to do something than not to do anything. Therefore, my respond to the homeless is to make them aware that they are not alone but there are others who care about them. In this sense, they will find a pleasant welcome and a joyful home in people's hearts.nilorahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14943348785573037779noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-31537811.post-1153663883384399212006-07-23T15:08:00.001+01:002023-11-05T15:55:48.269+00:00A Journey of Faith and Friendship: My Time with KKMK Arnoldus Bekasi

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-feature-settings: normal; font-kerning: auto; font-optical-sizing: auto; font-size-adjust: none; font-size: 11px; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; font-variation-settings: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">In the fast-paced world of today, where technology connects us across oceans and cultures, it’s often the simple moments of connection that remind us of the beauty of human relationships. As I gazed at the screen displaying photographs of my friends from KKMK in Puncak, I couldn’t help but feel a pang of longing. “I wish I were there,” a British friend of mine remarked, his voice laced with envy. “Why?” I inquired, curious about the source of his yearning. His response, “They are young… I wish we had many of them here,” struck a chord deep within me. For after months spent working in a parish in Bristol, England, the absence of youthful exuberance had left me with a profound sense of “loss.”

What unfolded before my eyes during this event was nothing short of awe-inspiring. Here, I met KKMK friends who seamlessly blended the sacred and the secular, engaging in prayer and reflection, acts of charity like contributing to orphans, and wholesome outdoor activities such as leisurely strolls through tea gardens. The concept of “three in one” activities captured my heart. These multifaceted endeavors are, however, a rarity among the youth in the parish where I presently serve. We grapple with the challenge of limited youth involvement in church-related activities, and among those who do participate, a sense of despondency often overshadows their enthusiasm. Many of the young souls I encounter are devout, yet their piety takes on an austere and fanatical form, where they seem to shun the world around them. In their view, joy and happiness are the exclusive domains of God, and they lead lives marked by an excessive degree of self-denial, closing themselves off from the rich tapestry of social existence.

From the distribution of used clothing to the provision of free healthcare in collaboration with SSP, they embrace these acts with open hearts and open hands. Such selflessness evokes memories of my time in Ireland, where young individuals willingly volunteered for a myriad of social causes. What sets KKMK friends apart is their unwavering commitment to “church service.” Unlike my experiences in Ireland, where young people often concentrated on social activities beyond the confines of the church, KKMK friends firmly root their actions within the ecclesiastical context and the mission of spreading the good news. Many among them are dedicated participants in local church activities, contributing to church choirs and partaking in liturgical events. This level of commitment is indeed a rare find in Ireland and England.

In my Bristol parish, young individuals are a scarce commodity. There exists a youth group called Youth2000, but its leadership has remained unchanged since its inception several years ago. The situation stands in stark contrast to my experience with KKMK friends at Arnoldus Bekasi. The regeneration system is indeed alive and well among them. A lecturer in leadership at All Hallows College in Dublin once told us that the vitality of an organization can be gauged by the efficiency of its regeneration process.

In this framework of service, leaders and organizers listen to the thoughts, feelings, and ideas of members, foster healthy relationships, and willingly participate in all activities, even the most menial tasks. This stands in stark contrast to the prevailing cultural norm where higher status is synonymous with detachment from humble tasks.

My own experiences as a participant in various activities with KKMK friends revealed an intricate web of connections between seniors and the current KKMK members. To further strengthen this network, we must improve communication with external groups such as SSP. Regular and efficient communication via email, websites, Yahoo groups, phone calls, brochures, and various other means of disseminating information can solidify the KKMK community. Consistent interactions and meetings with KKMK groups elsewhere, facilitated by shared activities and communication platforms, will undoubtedly fortify KKMK’s standing. KKMK Arnoldus Bekasi is not an isolated entity but a crucial part of a broader network of KKMK groups across different parishes in Indonesia.

As we take inspiration from the words of Euripides, “Whoso neglects learning in his youth, loses the past and is dead for the future,” may we embrace the knowledge and vitality of the youth, securing a future enriched by their energy.
